Review: Alex Wilson

Monday’s recital was definitely not the first time Alex Wilson has played the organ at Holy Trinity, Gosport, and hopefully it won’t be the last. But there were several ‘firsts’ at his recital:

  1. Although several of the pieces were familiar, it was the first time a recitalist has decided to ’dust off the pieces’ and bring a whole programme of English music of that particular era.

  2. We have never before observed a recitalist elbowing a stop shut whilst continuing to play all the notes, and;

  3. Never ever before have we heard a recitalist say, “I’m just going to try to play an improvised sonata in four movements in the style of Handel”!! Oh, Alex! I simply loved this item, especially the second and fourth movements which were lively and memorable.

This was a truly remarkable recital and we thanked Alex for his splendid performance. We also wished him well for the future; both in his upcoming nuptials and in his continuing varied and promising career in music. We are delighted to say that he promises to return…
